Exploring Pluma Hidalgo: A Hidden Gem in Oaxaca's Coffee Country
Discover the charm of this mountain town where Mexico's finest coffee meets traditional culture
Journey to Pluma Hidalgo
We're gradually exploring this beautiful region of Oaxaca. With each new place we discover, another exciting destination beckons us to visit. It's one of my favorite things about living in Oaxaca—within a short distance, there are so many different and unique experiences, climates, and cultures.
I first heard about Pluma Hidalgo about a year ago, and when someone mentions a coffee town, you know I have to visit. During our December trip to Huatulco, we realized how accessible it was. So when my mom said she was flying into Huatulco airport, we decided to rent a car and stay in the mountains for a few days. Living at the beach, it's essential to switch up the environment now and then. Not only does it put things in perspective and make you return home with more gratitude, but the crisp mountain air gives me a clarity that the hot, humid beach doesn't always provide—and let me tell you, I get some of my most restful sleep there.
Nestled in the mountains of Oaxaca, Pluma Hidalgo is a charming coffee-growing town that offers visitors a unique glimpse into Mexican coffee culture and rural life. At an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters, this pueblo mágico is known for producing some of Mexico's finest coffee.
We arrived via a smooth mountain road that led us to this tiny, quaint town perched at the summit. It's small—even smaller than I expected—with a few cafes, shops selling locally made coffee, chocolate, and honey, and only a couple of restaurants. The people are friendly, often gathering at the zócalo.
Where we stayed:
Casa de Niebla - A simple yet magical cabin sits atop a hill overlooking the town, just a 10-minute walk from restaurants and cafes. The beautiful grounds feature a garden showcasing local plants and flowers. Here, you'll spot colorful birds, coffee trees, and stunning views of the Sierra mountains—plus catch an epic sunset!
Cost per night for 4 guest/2 beds: $112 USD

Coffee Tour at Café Oro del Sur
The highlight of my visit was the immersive coffee tour at Café Oro del Sur. This family-run operation provides an in-depth look at the coffee-making process from seed to cup. The tour is conducted in Spanish, so it's helpful to have some basic understanding of the language. We hadn't booked in advance—we simply showed up and asked for a tour. From what I understand, if you book ahead, they include a locally made breakfast.

Where to Eat
As a preface, vegan options are limited here. I recommend either getting a place with a kitchen to cook your own food, finding accommodation that provides meals, or being prepared for the limited dining options.

Cafeteria Origen Magico: We dined here daily since it was one of the few restaurants open late, and it had a wonderful atmosphere. The seating area sits on a magical terrace (which inspired the name) that truly lives up to its description. With views overlooking the mountains, it's an ideal spot to enjoy the sunset while sipping Pluma Hidalgo coffee or chocolate. Their menu features both sweet and savory crêpes, tasty chicken wings, and various other dishes.

Restaurant Doña Andrea: Traditional Oaxacan dishes in a beautiful garden with a variety of different plants and flowers. They don’t have a menu so you ask what they have and they will prepare it!

Casa Semilla: A beautiful conscious café in town with vegan options and incredible coffee tastings. They offer different brewing methods and support a local collective that gives back to the disabled community. Though their food selection was limited the day we visited, we thoroughly enjoyed their delicious vegan dishes, desserts, and exceptional coffee. We sampled their Bourbon, Geisha, and Typical roasts.

Climate
Pluma's rainy season begins about 6–8 weeks earlier than Huatulco's and lasts longer, keeping the landscape lush and green. Despite more rainfall, the area enjoys lower humidity and milder temperatures both day and night—a welcome relief from Huatulco's intense winter heat.
Be aware that during rainy season, the road from Santa Maria Huatulco to Pluma becomes challenging, with waterfalls, landslides, and deep puddles. You'll need confident driving skills to navigate this route!
A quick note about Pluma Hidalgo: since it's nestled in the mountains, remember to pack layers. The sun can be intense during the day when you're not in the shade, but temperatures drop significantly at night.

Final Thoughts
Pluma Hidalgo offers an authentic glimpse into Mexico's coffee culture while providing a peaceful escape from more touristy destinations.
